The Principal York, York City, North Yorkshire

Known locally as the Grande Dame of luxurious hotels, The Principal York (formerly The Royal York Hotel) dates from 1878 and is the jewel in the county’s crown. This imposing hotel, located next to York’s world-famous Victorian railway station, has been given a spectacular multi-million pound facelift, with ravishing interiors evoking an imposing country home complete with a sweeping grand staircase and landscaped, private gardens.

It’s pure heaven to relax over Afternoon Tea in the sumptuous Garden Room while taking in the views of York Minster. Highly recommended is the delicious chocolate orange eclair produced by renowned Sous Patisserie Chef, Martyn Edmonds. The Principal also boasts a fabulous Refectory Kitchen and Terrace which despite its fine dining – all locally sourced, has a very cosy, homely atmosphere. A firm favourite is the pressed smoked ham hock with piccalilli, followed by mouthwatering cod fishcakes in parsley sauce. A visit to the wood panelled Chapter House Bar is a must to sample the Flying Scotsman cocktail (Slingsby gin, lychee liquor, lemon juice and agave syrup), before retiring to a luxurious bedroom complete with breathtaking views of the city. Many celebrities stay at the hotel but names are kept under wraps by protective but charming staff, though it is well known that Queen Victoria visited the hotel on her way to Balmoral.

OUR INVOLVEMENT

Part of my PR for The Principal has been to show the media what an amazing transformation has happened through its huge renovation which is breathtaking. I’ve ensured the hotel has been featured in numerous media outlets by means of a variety of areas – from inviting luxury blogging sites through to national newspaper editors – for a trip to this stunning hotel.
